A Little About Me

Hi! I’m Micah. I am a nature lover at heart. I grew up on a small farm in northern Alberta, surrounded by forests that stretched as far as the eye could see, a river running through my family property, and many nearby lakes. I had the freedom to explore in all seasons. One of my favorite things to do was wander the forest on my own, get lost, and find my way back, testing the knowledge my father taught me from a young age. This gave me a sense of freedom and peace. As a young adult, life and work moved me and my young family to the city. However, I still felt the pull to be in nature as much as possible. I started cycling off-road in the forested areas of Fish Creek and hiking anywhere I could find a trail. You might even find me making a trail of my own if something interesting caught my eye! I am a lifelong learner, filled with wonder and curiosity about the natural world. This passion led me to start a nature-based dayhome in 2000. It gave me the flexibility to earn an income while instilling these values in my children and the children in my care. Moving to the south side of Calgary, near a nature reserve, allowed me to expand my love for nature and modify my dayhome into one of the first of its kind—offering Monday to Friday Forest and Nature School, while also providing the comfort of a home base and a mix of preschool activities. I’ve completed the Forest School Practitioners course with the goal of helping young children fully immerse themselves in nature, learn through child-led, inquiry-based play, curiosity, and risk-taking. This allows children to gain confidence, explore their limits, and develop new skills in a class that has no walls—something that many children don’t have the opportunity to experience. I love being in nature, sharing that love, teaching young children, and creating a sense of wonder and curiosity in their little minds. I can’t wait to help your little one realize their full potential in their journey of self-discovery and learning at my home and nature reserve in the SE corner of Calgary!
